Default Cessna 182 canard!

"Pilot Getaways" has a feature article with a Cessna 182 that has been modified to make it STOL. They added a CANARD to the front of the plane! They also made the wings longer. Stall speed is 31 knots...

I think that was the 'redbird' mod or something like that? I heard they were great for STOL, but sucked in the air...

There was one of these based at LNA. It also has extended droop ailerons which means they have no authority in slow flight. To compensate for this it has fins on top of the wings that turn with the ailerons. Wierd. I spoke to the pilot - he agrees - Can land backward in a 35kt wind, but its a DOG.

These guys are building new versions of the wren conversion...

http://www.katmai-260se.com/history.html

The company "Peterson" makes the Katmai which is targeted at the Bush Plane market and the 260se which is just supposed to be a safe plane for everyone else.

The FBO on the GA side of AUS had a magazine with them on the cover.

I had never heard of the Wren conversion. I was looking at it trying to figure out what it was. I guess it is exactly what it looks like. A cessna with a canard.
