Default Colors Other Than White ?

I've seen a handful of Long Eze's that were not white and I've heard a rumor that certain epoxies allow for this - is this true or merely wishful thinking ?

Not all paint is created equal.
Various areas of the aircraft have differing levels of sensitivity.

Example: A wing painted darker could get hot enough to actually melt the foam underneath.

Akzo Nobel produces a Solar Heat Reflective coating that defies what would ordinarily be off limits on the viable color chart. It will take a little effort to get but it is more accessible than it once was.

Epoxy is only half the problem. There are now several high Tg epoxies. However the foam underneath is still heat sensitive. Also, getting the new high Tg epoxies to their ultimate Tg requires a post cure that could be higher than the safe temperature for the foam. Using high temp epoxy, high temp foam, and a controllable post cure oven might allow you to paint a plane darker colors. I wouldn't waste time or money on it though. Also, you would have to trust your life with materials that have never been tested for safety before in a Canard.

What did that Australian guy with the "Audi Silver" colored Long Ez use to get away with having that color ? Just curios because I know it gets pretty hot in most of Australia.

"DON'T PAINT IT ANY OTHER COLOR THAN WHITE !!!"

...but then you search google images, and look at photo albums from Rough River and other canard gatherings, and then you go to fly-ins and you see planes painted lots of different colors. Maybe MOSTLY white, but lots of colored graphics. Some have been flying for 25...30 years. And AFAIK there are no documented cases of structural failure due to a paint job.

Heat reflective paint is fairly new. That silver plane has been around a long time and was silver from birth. Lots of silver cars in tropical climates, so maybe its not a bad choice.

Just what I wanted. A composite aircraft disguised as a spam can. LOL

Hey, if you were really clever you could ghost in rivets and panel seams.

Silver, rivets, rockets, whatever....

Terry Schubert mentioned one year at Rough River how he walked the airport in the evening and noticed the dew on the planes how it showed up delamination spots. You'd never tell during the day.

I'd think you can paint it any color you wanted but as a rule keep it light in structural areas such as the wings. No doubt there's so many factors- epoxy brand, proper mix ratio, foam type, proper layup, location, etc. Maybe it will never ever make a difference but it points this issue out quite clearly in the plans. There's a graph in the plans that show different colors and surface temps. I'm not preaching "do by the plans" But there's so much time and money in these planes why would anyone risk it with a high heat absorbing color unless you're absolutely sure without a doubt nothing's going to happen.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I first saw that Mig pic.

The problem is, it's already tough enough to spot us when we are in the air so why make it more difficult by painting your bird a pixelated-camo scheme?

The other thing to consider is if your plane ever goes down and you are in a position where you require rescue, do you really want to be hard to find?

.... cool pic though.

Well I can say from 20 + years of flying in TCAS equipped aircraft the first thing I always see when looking for traffic is lights. The more the better, especially in the daytime. If you asked me the color of the aircraft all I could tell you is all I saw was an outline or darkish blob. Just about all traffic is pretty difficult to see when it is at or below your altitude because it's lost in ground clutter.

As far as spotting things on the ground the first cue I always see is movement. A friend from my old unit was the one that found the "stolen" A-10 that crashed in the mountains west of Denver awhile back. He said the first thing he spotted was the movement of the white paper from the aircraft logbook fluttering around on a mountainside.
