Default Front opening canopy

I've said that if there were one thing I'd do differently, it would be a front opening canopy. I've seen some that involve the entire canopy, and they look a bit heavy. Others do a split behind the front seat and have a lift up door at the back. Plans for the Cosy Classic canopy are available from Uli Walter (someone have his contact info?)

One advantage of the front opening is that it can't fly open on it's own if you forget to latch it. Another is that the passenger can get in from their side.
A disadvantage, perhaps, is that there is NO WAY you'd be able to get it open in flight enough to bail out in the event of fire or structural failure. I don't carry a parachute, so jumping isnt an attractive option for me anyway.

Gentlemen, please, we can only follow so many threads at one time. Our front opening canopy, gullwing rear is in the works

You could always invert, open the canopy and release.

Great! Now we have front canopy and inverted flight in the same thread.

John, I'm going with the front hinge, but I think might be possible to zoom the thing up into a deep stall and get the airspeed down to 0 and get out. In fact a deep stall might be the only time you would ever need a chute. Engine out and most likely you would fly it to a landing. Any failure of the airframe and the G loads would be so high you could not get out anyway.

Talking Front hinged canopy

If you just put in an ejection seat you can eject right thru the canopy!

Default Get OUT!

OK, having been a skydiver in my college years...I was amazed by the number of instances of people surviving partial canopies and no canopy incidents. We all had a conversation at the drop zone that if the plane were structurally incapable of "flying" or on fire that we couldn't get out, most of use would take our chances getting out. Aim for water! I am not sure but I think most people that survived hit feet first as opposed to flat. Try to make yourself as draggy ( is that a word?) as possible. I personally am a fan of BRS and the forward opening canopy on the MARK IV.......But the "mini-starship" will probably have gull type ala....Velocity.
