I have a lot of mods I need to do to the bottom cowl.
I am removing the two scoops. Those have been replaced by NACA scoops on top.
There are also the exhaust tubes in the cowl that point straight back. The original plans/design call for exhaust that points straight down out of the cowl which were really draggy. The tube mood was an improvement but the in-cowl exhaust style is the lowest drag solution.

That said, there are two designs (by CustomAircraft.com in El Cajon) to choose from.
The Long-EZ version (33804-1):

and the Cozy IV version (33702-2):


Dave Adams brought up some good data assembled by Mike Melvill that made the Cozy IV exhaust design the #1 choice due to the position of the exhaust outlet. (Thanks Dave!)

So they are now on order and I can get back to modifying the cowl knowing that it will be one mod vs. a two-stage process.

So the scoops come off, the tubes come off and I may have to fabricate a blister for each exhaust pipe. This will be a good winter project.

Time to start modifying the bottom cowl,

Only 70 days until spring.

Bill, I was looking over the issue with the Hydraulic Cylinder in the keel for the nose gear. I think your suggestion is right on the money.

I can cut the top off the keel aft of the stick and with the nose gear in the raised position, I should be able to get to it, no problem.

The access holes (as laid out in the plans) were never cut out, Once I get past this step, I can decide if I need to epoxy and glass it back together or install a series of anchor nuts so it can be removed in the future.

The keel is different in the standard/RG. It only runs from the forward canard bulkhead to the forward face of the front seat(s) bulkhead. It does not have the gull wing doors like current versions do. Instead it has a single (clam shell) door that terminate at the longeron. That along with the front seat bulkhead might explain what the keel didn't need to run the full length of the cabin.

Good to see you in Longmont last weekend. Spending a little time with 4 canard guys was definitely beneficial for me.

Well, it's easy for me to say "why don't you just cut a big hole there...", because its not my plane! Ha!

But seriously, that's what's nice about a composite plane, you can just cut a neat hole in foam/glass at an angle, then flox it back together. A few plies of BID for strength, a little micro and paint - Voila!

I decided to tackle the hydraulic cylinders issue today.
Man, what a PIA. This truly was not built with any thought towards maintenance. I get the nut off of the nose gear cylinder only to find that the nut/screw holding the bracket to the floor of the fuselage won't allow the bolt holding the cylinder to the bracket enough clearance to remove it. I finally figured it out. I could access the offending screw from under the fuselage and by clamping the nut with a vice grips.

I also discovered that the nut on the bolt holing the main gear in it's mount was barely on the bolt. No threads exposed.

I talked with another Velocity owner who was having the main gear cylinder rebuilt as determined by his A&P. He couldn't get it out due to interference issues similar to mine. They settled on rebuilding it in place.

Some things go incredibly slow.
Almost 4 hours to put in the 4 bolts & nuts that secure the master cylinders for the brakes. This was not installed in a manner that would lend itself toward future maintenance.
At least I was able to cross this off the list.

I expect to get my hydraulic cylinders back by the end of the week.

Oh wow, that sounds horrible!!!

On my Cozy and on my old BMW motorcycle, everything is so easy to take apart, maintain, and put back together. I am very thankful to Burt and Nat for designs that allow disassembly and maintenance. I am also glad that our community shares stories like this and reminds us all to build with future maintenance in mind.

I suppose it goes without saying TMann to make sure you get it right the first time, cause not many people can stand that kind of torture.

Do you think you'll ever need to remove those master cylinders again?

Sounds like building a ship in a bottle! Or rebuilding it...

They must have put that gear on the bench, then built the plane around it!

That's not to say that the Velocity wasn't setup correctly. The problem is most likely the builder, not the design.

If I do, it will be to switch to Matco M/C & Toe Brakes.
Much easier to access.

Yeah, that definitely captures the mood.
When I compare the design of the Velocity retracts and compare them to the Infinity retracts, it's like night and day in every respect. The Infinity gear is superior in every respect.

Actually have been making some good progress as of late.
I'm putting together a new through firewall fitting and will hopefully have my new fuel valve installed within the next couple of weeks.
