This is an interesting discussion, helpful for other folks looking for a new prop

Here's what we have so far:

1. Sterba - 2 blade Maple prop, urethane LE - $535
2. Hertzler Silver Bullet - 2 blade Maple/Carbon/Glass with urethane LE, very nice and efficient prop - $1400
3. Catto - 3 blade, wood with carbon and glass cover, with urethane or metal LE, very nice and efficient prop - $3200 ?
4. Prince - 2 blade wood with LE protection, P-tip - $2000, 3 blade $5800
5. Culver (Valley Eng) - 2 blade wood - $900

Thanks Bill
I just noticed the same thing.
I looked at Sterba web site --- looks nice and of course way cheaper. I sent him an email. It will be interesting to see what he says.
I guess the big questions is "why the huge difference in price".

I also like the look of the Gary Hertzler props, and they say they have some glass. I wonder if they have fiberglass over the whole prop. And of course the Catto props are beautiful --- and have the nickle leading edge. But for the price of even Gary's I could by 3 Sterba props.

I would love to see what other folks think.
Mark

Ed Sterba props are $475 --- -maple with urethane leading edges.
Sounds like a great price.

I sent him a couple questions.
I think I might go for it.

This post on the canard aviators mail list today seems germane:
===========================================
It hasn't been mentioned here before, but it has been discussed at length on Facebook. The accident happened on Nov 11th. Jeff posted about it a couple hours after it happened.

It started with prop blade failure at altitude. As seems to always happen, the piece of prop hit the winglet, and in this case was a direct hit to rudder. The entire inside skin of the rudder was gone and all the blue foam was visible.

He was high and was able to glide to the airport after quickly shutting down the engine. But, it was windy and a gust got him at the end resulting in a hard landing that ripped out the main gear bow, etc.

The low time prop, made by Sterba, is being analyzed by the FAA.

Ron

That is disconcerting news, really glad he is OK.

A lot of damage... waiting for info on the cause.

Amazing that a piece of the prop can hit the rudder - especially since it has a lot of other places that it can go!

Thanks Rick and John!
