Default T.a.n.s.t.a.f.l.

There

Lunch ..... or so my Economics Professor once told me.

My engine guy was helping his daughter move and fell through a banister over a staircase. 14 broken ribs, two punctured lungs, broken shoulder blade, fractured vertebrae, concussion, three weeks in the hospital and 10 months off of work. Very tough luck indeed.

The other side of that is now I'm dealing with another guy who is walking in cold on this project and (of course) everything needs to be replaced. It's going to take a little effort to rein this guy in. I truly wonder if we are even talking about the same engine. I have a $5K inspect & advise turning into a $15K-$22K rebuild.

I feel for their situation but having this guy out of the shop for 10 months could really drive a lot of business away. I feel like collecting my parts and going home.

Thumbs down Re: T.a.n.s.t.a.f.l.

TMANN- That is bad news. Is this engine a Lycoming 0-360? I think you must be an economics major, your estimates are right on, colored a little by your desire to not invest a fortune. Based on similar experiences I've had, I would pick the engine up ASAP while you can still remember what and where everything is. Hopes for it flying the end of this month are dashed.

Well it really doesn't seem right. Sorry to whine on account of I am aware that this is an expensive game we are involved in but this is only 85 hours SMOH. I know that the possibility exists that the work done may have been sub-standard but I just do not get the impression the guy #2 is, shall we say "one with my IO-360."

These guys have an excellent reputation for putting out quality work but I think that maybe they are getting hit on so many sides with the side-lining of their "Chief Inspector" that they are just shooting from the hip vs. picking up where he left off.

I'll give them a little time to do some actual discovery on their own and then approach them again.

Yup, if the first guy said everything was OK, it probably is. The second guy is just being extra cautious, I think. Go get the parts and a Chilton's manual (ha) and put it back together yourself. Since it's apart, you can check it all yourself, too.

New bearings and rings of course, polish the crank, check all clearances, check the cam and lifters for pits, put the lifters back in the correct bores, use the right assembly lube, torque everything to spec and you should be good.

I'm sure you can find someone in EAA that's rebuilt one of those to look over your shoulder

Maybe you can haul all of the parts up to his hospital room... he's probably bored anyway...

Good luck

If it were me I'd just go and get the P.h.o.k.n.g. thing back and do what Bill says.

After helping Martin tear down his 360 Continental I can see that these things are pretty much dirt simple. If you were (are?) going to rebuild your own Wankel for the LEZ.... and if you can build a plane in the first place (with vacuum bags even) then you can do this. Fear not.

I have a tutorial on assembling Lyc 360 at home someplace. It even gots pitchers. Be home in about 10 days and I'll dig it up and send it.

I have a rebuild DVD on rebuilding a IO-360 however in order to have this flying this summer, some of this needs to be delegated.

I'll have to see where this goes but yes, there is a limit as to how much BS I'm willing to put up with.

Angry Re: T.a.n.s.t.a.f.l.

On somewhat similar note, I just purchased six jugs for the TSIO-360F I am having overhauled. Wow, so great that FedEx was able to get the jugs from PA to Texas in two days, but even though I waited to go to sleep until 1500 hrs (I am currently a night shift supervisor) they did not leave my delivery. No note left. I had to track online to determine they would not leave the package at the door unless I answered....or I assume since the notes said no one answered. Hell, they use to leave my mom's narcotics on the porch when she took too long to get to the door on her walker....but wont leave my cylinders.

I woke up four or five times thinking I may have heard them, but no joy..... Very annoyed.

Vent off.

Chris
I too am using a small repair shop....and get a bit of concern that someone may get hurt or something and I am left holding the bag. In the rotary world, Tracy Crooks health mattered a lot...and then he retired. geeesh. I want to support the little guy, but it is an educated risk (as it is for my law clients)

Well .... it's looking more & more like I'm going to be rebuilding this one myself. They are putting a pencil to it now to come up with a number but there is a blemish in the crank that the original guy said would not be acceptable for a certified engine but would be okay for this application. It had been ground but a small 1/4" diameter flat spot remains.

Now the new guy is saying there is a really, really small crack located there. So now what.

I'm looking at my options at this point. There have been many suggestions on the forum in the past. Using those as a base I have calls out for additional information.

Ask to see the crack under a blacklight with zyglo. I wonder why there's a 1/4" flatspot on a crank journal...

Or get a new crank
